Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects up to 30 million men in the United States, while 50% of men suffer from an enlarged prostate by the age of 50. Fortunately, tadalafil, which is commonly sold under the brand name Cialis, may help men experiencing sexual dysfunction, and/or minimize the disruptive symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

What is tadalafil?

Tadalafil is a type of medication called a phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme (PDE-5) inhibitor. This means it blocks PDE-5 which allows blood vessels to relax so that more blood can flow to certain areas of the body. Tadalafil, the generic for Cialis, is prescribed to be taken either once a day, each day, or as needed for ED. It should not be used to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STI). It is also not recommended for men who have had a heart attack, stroke, or abnormal blood pressure.

What conditions does tadalafil treat?

Tadalafil is prescribed to men to treat impotence (erectile dysfunction) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). Erectile dysfunction refers to an inability to get and maintain an erection, for sex. Tadalafil is also prescribed to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly referred to as BPH or an enlarged prostate.

Common Symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction

Tadalafil may help men suffering from symptoms of erectile dysfunction such as:

  • Difficulty achieving an erection
  • Difficulty maintaining an erection
  • Lack of sex drive (reduced libido)

Common Symptoms of Enlarged Prostate

Tadalafil may help men to experience relief from bothersome, inconvenient symptoms of BPH including:

  • Difficulty urinating or a weak urine stream
  • Sudden urge to urinate
  • Need to urinate frequently, especially at night
  • Discomfort after urinating
  • Inability to fully empty the bladder

How does tadalafil work?

When used as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, tadalafil helps to increase blood flow to the penis, to get an erection. Many men will notice that tadalafil will begin working within 30 minutes, although it may take up to 2 hours to reach full effectiveness.

When used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH), tadalafil appears to work by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder.

Common Side Effects of Tadalafil

Commonly reported side effects of tadalafil include:

  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Back pain
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness when standing
  • Flushing
  • Indigestion
  • Stuffy nose/congestion

Rare, but serious side effects of tadalafil have also been reported and you should seek medical guidance right away if you experience:

  • Sudden blindness in one or both eyes
  • Sudden hearing loss or ringing in the ears
  • Erection lasting more than 4 hours
  • Severe allergic reaction (itching, swelling, rash, difficulty breathing)

Can you buy tadalafil over the counter?

You will need a prescription from a health care provider to buy tadalafil. If you’re experiencing symptoms of BPH or difficulty getting or maintaining an erection, talk to your health care provider to see if tadalafil is an appropriate treatment. If you’re prescribed tadalafil, you will need to fill the prescription at a pharmacy.
