The Cost of Macrobid Without Insurance

According to the National Kidney Foundation, urinary tract infections (UTIs) are responsible for almost 10 million visits to health care providers each year. Between 80%-90% of UTIs are caused by a single bacteria, which will need to be treated with antibiotics such as Macrobid and its generic nitrofurantoin.

Here’s what to know about Macrobid including the cost of Macrobid without insurance.

How much does Macrobid cost?

The cost of generic Macrobid, nitrofurantoin, without insurance starts at $32.27* for 100 mg and 30 capsules using an RxSaver coupon.

What is Macrobid?

Macrobid is an antibiotic medication used to treat urinary tract infections. Because it is an antibiotic, it will not be effective in treating any type of viral infection. It is prescribed to treat certain types of UTIs only, such as bladder infections (acute cystitis). It is not prescribed for kidney infections.

What conditions does Macrobid treat?

Macrobid is prescribed to treat UTIs. A UTI is a bacterial infection that can occur anywhere in the urinary tract. The vast majority of UTIs are caused by the bacteria Escherichia coli (E. Coli), which is frequently found in your GI (gastrointestinal tract).

Common Symptoms of UTIs

UTIs are more common in women than in men. But both men and women can get these infections in the urinary tract. Symptoms of a UTI include:

  • Urgent need to urinate
  • Inability to empty your bladder completely
  • Frequent urination
  • Minimal amounts of urine being passed, despite the urge to urinate
  • Signs of blood in your urine (pink, red, or brown-colored urine)
  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic pain (more common in women than men)
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Cloudy urine

How does Macrobid work?

Macrobid, and its generic nitrofurantoin monohydrate, work by stopping the growth of bacteria, that is causing the infection. For uncomplicated UTIs, such as a bladder infection, a short course of Macrobid may be sufficient to treat the infection.

Common Side Effects of Macrobid

Macrobid and its authorized generic, nitrofurantoin may cause side effects. Notify your health care provider if you experience any side effects of Macrobid, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Itching
  • Gas
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Rash
  • Vomiting

Can you buy Macrobid over-the-counter?

You cannot buy Macrobid or nitrofurantoin over-the-counter in the United States. It is available by prescription only. Your health care provider will determine the dosage and how long you should take Macrobid. Macrobid and all other antibiotics should be taken only as prescribed.
