The Cost of Amoxicillin Without Insurance

Used to treat various bacterial infections, amoxicillin is a generic penicillin antibiotic that is a very commonly prescribed medication and is available as a tablet, capsule, liquid, or chewable tablet.

How much does amoxicillin cost without insurance?

The cost of amoxicillin without insurance starts at $5.03* for 500mg for 21 capsules using an RxSaver coupon.

Amoxicillin is a generic drug, making it cheaper than brand name drugs. It is a widely prescribed antibiotic and is considered to be quite affordable. An RxSaver coupon can further reduce the price of amoxicillin, and may even reduce the price to less than your insurance copay.

What is amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin belongs to a class of drugs called the penicillins, which are derived from a form of fungi. Amoxicillin can treat a broader range of bacteria when compared to penicillin. It is effective in treating many types of bacterial infections and is also sometimes used in conjunction with other medications to treat stomach ulcers.

What conditions does amoxicillin treat?

Amoxicillin treats a wide range of bacterial infections occurring in multiple systems in the body. For example, bacterial infections commonly affect the respiratory tract, the urinary tract, and the skin. Sexually transmitted infections including gonorrhea and chlamydia are also caused by bacteria, and thus can be treated with Amoxicillin. Some of the many conditions that amoxicillin is prescribed to treat include:

Common Symptoms of Bacterial Infections

Symptoms of bacterial infections are wide-ranging, depending upon what type of bacteria is responsible, and where the infection is located in your body. However, many bacterial infections will cause similar symptoms including:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Pain/Discomfort in the area of the infection
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Skin flushing
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Symptoms of Upper Respiratory Tract Infection

Bacterial infections in your upper respiratory tract (including ears, throat, and sinuses) may cause symptoms such as:

  • Facial pain
  • Sore ear
  • Drainage from ear
  • Itching and irritation in and around the ear
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Postnasal drip
  • Stuffy nose
  • Pain and difficulty swallowing
  • Swelling of the tonsils

Symptoms of Lower Respiratory Tract Infections

If you’ve developed a lower respiratory tract bacterial infection, symptoms can include:

  • Green, yellow, bloody mucus or phlegm
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Exhaustion
  • Cough

Symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) caused by bacteria include chlamydia. Symptoms of these bacterial infections include:

  • Abnormal or foul-smelling genital discharge
  • Pain during or after sex
  • Bleeding after sex
  • Pain or burning sensations when urinating

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections

Most women and some men will develop a bacterial infection in the urinary tract at some point in their lives. Symptoms of a urinary tract infection caused by bacteria include:

  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Pain or burning when urinating
  • Frequent urination
  • Inability to empty your bladder
  • Cloudy urine
  • Inability to produce urine, even if it feels like you need to urinate

How does amoxicillin work?

As a penicillin antibiotic, amoxicillin works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It does so by preventing bacteria from forming cell walls and ultimately kills the bacteria. Amoxicillin will not treat viral infections, such as the flu, the common cold, or COVID-19.

Common Side Effects of Amoxicillin

The majority of people prescribed amoxicillin will not experience serious side effects. However, some mild side effects are common and include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

Rare, but very serious side effects can result from the use of amoxicillin. If you have been prescribed amoxicillin and develop serious side effects, contact your health care provider immediately. Serious side effects of amoxicillin may include:

  • Serious allergic reaction (hives, skin rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Dark-colored or bloody urine
  • Seizure

Do not take amoxicillin if you are allergic to penicillin, as it can lead to a fatal allergic reaction to the medication. Always inform your health care provider of any or all allergies to medications.

Can you buy amoxicillin over the counter?

Amoxicillin cannot be purchased over the counter. You will need a prescription and need to visit a pharmacy to get amoxicillin. This is partly due to the risk of developing antibiotic resistance, which occurs when bacteria evolve and become resistant to the antibiotics that are used to treat them. To prevent antibiotic resistance, it is necessary to complete your antibiotic course if prescribed. Prescribers exercise clinical judgement when prescribing in order to prevent overuse and misuse of antibiotics such as amoxicillin in the community.
