Six Common Blood Thinners and RxSaver Prices

Millions of Americans are prescribed anticoagulant medications known as blood thinners each year, according to the National Blood Clot Alliance. The reason for the large numbers of prescriptions? On average 274 people die every day from blood clots. Fortunately, medications are available to prevent and treat blood clots. Here is an overview of the most common blood thinners, along with RxSaver prices for each medication.

What are the most common blood thinners?

The most common blood thinners prescribed in the U.S. are:

- Warfarin (generic Jantoven, Coumadin)

- Heparin

- Enoxaparin (generic Lovenox)

- Xarelto

- Eliquis

- Savaysa

Warfarin Sodium (Generic Coumadin, Jantoven)

For years, [warfarin][1] was the most commonly prescribed blood thinner. However, those taking warfarin require regular blood monitoring. With the approval of new medications, warfarin is no longer the only option for preventing blood clots. But, it remains a popular and very affordable treatment. Warfarin works by keeping blood flowing freely, and decreasing clotting protein production.

Heparin Sodium

[Heparin][2] is a generic anticoagulant, making it more affordable than some of the newer brand-name anticoagulants available on the market. It is used to prevent blood clots in the lungs and legs and is often used to prevent clots during dialysis or after surgery.

Enoxaparin Sodium (Generic Lovenox)

[Enoxaparin][3] helps to prevent blood clots, which also helps to reduce the risk of [heart attack][4] or stroke. It is an affordable, common blood thinner.

Xarelto

[Xarelto][5] is a brand-drug that has increased in popularity since it first became FDA-approved for the treatment of blood clots. It is often used in conjunction with an aspirin regimen to prevent [stroke][6], heart attack, and death in individuals who suffer from coronary artery disease. Xarelto remains an expensive drug, as no generic is available yet. The manufacturer does offer [financial assistance][7] to eligible individuals.

Eliquis

[Eliquis][8] is a common blood thinner prescribed to individuals with atrial fibrillation (AFib), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is a brand drug, so it can be expensive if you do not have insurance. However, the manufacturer does offer eligible individuals [financial assistance][9].

Savaysa

[Savaysa][10] is a brand-name anticoagulant medication. It is prescribed to prevent blood clots from forming. Like all anticoagulants, it works by decreasing the production of certain blood clotting proteins. There is no generic for Savaysa available, so it can be an expensive drug if you do not have insurance. Savaysa does offer a [savings card][11] to eligible individuals which may help you save money.
