Warfarin Warnings

Warfarin can cause very serious (possibly fatal) bleeding. This is more likely to occur when you first start taking this medication or if you take too much warfarin.

To decrease your risk for bleeding, your doctor or other health care provider will monitor you closely and check your lab results (INR test) to make sure you are not taking too much warfarin. Keep all medical and laboratory appointments. Tell your doctor right away if you notice any signs of serious bleeding. See also Side Effects section.
  • Do not take aspirin products without doctor approval. Continue taking low-dose aspirin to prevent heart attack/stroke unless doctor tells you to stop.
  • Do not use this drug if you become pregnant.
  • Immediately report bleeding or bruising to your doctor.
  • If you drink alcohol, discuss the safe use of alcohol while using this medication with your healthcare professional.
  • Patients regularly using NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen) and this drug may be at a greater risk for stomach bleeding and should consult their physician.
  • Pregnant women should avoid contact with this medication.
  • Obtain medical advice before taking non-prescription drugs as some may affect the action of this medication.
  • Herbal/dietary supplement products may interact with this medication. Discuss any such product with your doctor or pharmacist before taking.
  • Read the boxed warning information for this medication.

Lactation Warnings

  • BREASTFEEDING CAN CONTINUE DURING TREATMENT

Pregnancy Warnings

  • Treatment is acceptable in pregnant women with prosthetic heart valves. Transplacental transfer has been reported. Congenital malformations in humans have been reported. Consider maternal treatment benefits versus potential fetal/neonatal adverse outcomes.
