Pregnancy Warnings

  • NSAIDs may cause premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus. In utero exposure to salicylates is associated with neonatal death, intracranial hemorrhage in premature infants and decreased birth weight. Avoid NSAIDs during pregnancy, specifically during the 3rd trimester. Consider maternal treatment benefits versus potential fetal/neonatal adverse outcomes. Expert guidelines recommend low dose aspirin for pre-eclampsia, prevention of thrombosis and pregnancy loss in the presence of maternal antiphospholipid syndrome.
  • Insufficient human data available. Limited epidemiologic data suggest no increased risk for major congenital malformation after first trimester exposure. Animal data suggest developmental toxicity at doses less than 5 times the maximum recommended human dose. Animal data suggest developmental toxicity at doses greater than 10 times the maximum recommended human dose.
