Two Major Generics Discontinued by Mylan Pharmaceuticals

The FDA announced Mylan Pharmaceuticals will no longer manufacture two generic medications – Doxycycline Hyclate capsules and Omeprazole capsules. The FDA’s website says the discontinuation of the products are due to a business decision made by Mylan. The company will still manufacture the 50 mg strength of Doxycycline Hyclate delayed-release tablets.

How Will This Change Affect You?

--------------------------------

Since both medications are generic, the discontinuation may not directly affect you. Since both Doxycycline Hyclate and Omeprazole are generic medications, they will still be manufactured by other pharmaceutical companies.

Will Prices for Omeprazole and Doxycycline Hyclate Change?

----------------------------------------------------------

There is a chance the prices for Omeprazole and Doxycycline Hyclate could change over time, but that is currently unclear. Since Mylan is such a large manufacturer, there is a chance prices could change. Given that seven other companies manufacture Doxycycline Hyclate and 10 other companies manufacture Omeprazole, the likelihood of seeing major price increases is rather low.

What is Doxycycline Hyclate Used For?

-------------------------------------

Doxycycline Hyclate is used to reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain effectiveness of Doxycycline Hyclate and other antibacterial drugs. It should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria.

What is Omeprazole Used For?

----------------------------

Omeprazole is used to treats frequent heartburn (occurs 2 or more days a week). Omeprazole is the generic equivalent for Prilosec.
